Jean Marie Vianney’s heartfelt love song took home the top prize at the student songwriting competition.
When SNHU’s Global Education Movement (SNHU GEM) announced the inaugural songwriting competition, learners from across Africa and the Middle East jumped at the opportunity to showcase their talents. The competition saw entries from learners across SNHU GEM sites.
Among the learners that submitted an original song was Jean Marie Vianney – a SNHU GEM and Kepler College learner living in Kiziba Refugee Camp, Rwanda. In high school, Jean Marie was known for writing and performing his original songs at talent shows and school events. He was excited by the opportunity to submit an original song for consideration by the judges of the songwriting competition.
“Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember,” said Jean Marie. “It’s not just a hobby for me; it’s a fundamental part of who I am.”
Inspired by a friend’s love story, Jean Marie crafted “Litha My Love,” a moving song about a teenage romance that blossoms into an enduring commitment. The song was a hit with the panel of judges and an ecstatic Jean Marie was announced as the winner.
“I pour my heart into writing my songs, holding on to the hope that my future holds brighter prospects,” he said. “Winning wasn’t just a happy moment; it was a big step towards making my dreams come true.”
Jean Marie is pursuing his bachelor’s degree in Communications with a concentration in Business and expects to graduate in 2025. He looks forward to applying the knowledge and skills he has gained to make an impact in the workforce and sharing more of his music with the world.
“My journey as an SNHU GEM student has been life changing. Now, armed with my newfound skills, I look forward to a promising future filled with opportunities and growth.”
